Caffeine vs PDRN eye patches: which is better for puffy eyes?
Caffeine is the classic de-puffer; PDRN is the K-beauty ingredient everyone is talking about. They do different jobs — and the best eye bag patches increasingly use both.
The quick verdict
Choose caffeine eye patches if your main issue is morning puffiness and you want a fast, visibly de-puffed look. Choose PDRN eye patches if you're more concerned about fine lines, dryness and a tired, crepey texture. Choose a combination — caffeine plus PDRN, collagen and niacinamide — if you want one step that covers both, which is why that's the approach of our favourite for women.
What caffeine does in eye patches
Caffeine is one of the longest-standing ingredients in eye care. The Cleveland Clinic lists caffeine-containing eye creams among the products that can help with puffiness. In a patch, caffeine is paired with a cooling gel, and the combination is what gives that fresh, de-puffed look on a heavy morning.
What caffeine doesn't do is hydrate much on its own or support the look of firmness. That's why most caffeine eye patches also contain humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, and often niacinamide for a brighter-looking finish.
Good caffeine eye patches
- Good Molecules Caffeine Energizing Hydrogel Eye Patches — a budget jar with caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid.
- Peace Out Puffy Eyes — biocellulose sheets with caffeine and niacinamide.
- Patchology FlashPatch Rejuvenating Eye Gels — caffeine and collagen with a very short wear time.
What PDRN does in eye patches
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide: purified fragments of DNA. It was first isolated from placenta, but today it's mostly extracted from salmon and trout and highly purified — which is why you'll see it described as "salmon DNA" or listed as sodium DNA on ingredient lists. It became a star ingredient in Korean skincare, and PDRN hydrogel patches are now among the most searched eye products.
In skincare, PDRN is used to hydrate and support smoother, firmer-looking skin. It's worth being clear about the evidence: most of the stronger research on PDRN involves injections given by professionals, not creams or patches. A 2026 split-face study of a topical PDRN eye cream reported improvements in the look of periocular wrinkles and eye bags over four weeks, but it was a cream rather than a patch, and the authors had industry links. So think of PDRN patches as a promising cosmetic, not a medical procedure in a jar.

Why the best eye bag patches combine both
Most people don't have just one under-eye concern. Puffiness on waking often comes with dryness, fine lines and some shadowing. A patch that pairs caffeine (for the de-puffed look) with PDRN or collagen (for hydration and smoother-looking skin) and niacinamide (for brightness) covers all of that in one 20-minute step. That's the reasoning behind our favourite for women, the Feel1 PDRN Eyepatch, which combines salmon PDRN, collagen, caffeine and niacinamide (see our Feel1 PDRN eye patches review).
Where copper peptide fits in
Copper peptide is a third option you'll see more of. Like PDRN, it's used to support the look of firmer, smoother skin, and it pairs well with caffeine. Our favourite for men, the Feel1 Copper Peptide Under-Eye Patches, combines copper peptide with collagen, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and caffeine. Read more in our guide to eye bag patches for men.
How to choose
- Puffy in the morning, fine the rest of the day? Caffeine patches, chilled in the fridge.
- Dry, lined, tired-looking under-eyes? PDRN, collagen or peptide patches, used regularly.
- Both? A combined formula — the best value if you want one jar.
- Sensitive eyes? Skip retinol-containing and heavily scented patches, and patch-test first.
- Vegan or avoiding fish? Pass on PDRN and pick a caffeine and hyaluronic acid formula instead.

FAQ
Do caffeine eye patches really reduce puffiness?
Caffeine combined with a cool hydrogel can make morning puffiness look visibly reduced for a few hours. It's most effective for fluid-related puffiness — the kind that's worst on waking. The effect is temporary, so caffeine patches work best as a quick refresh before work or an event.
Is PDRN in eye patches really salmon DNA?
Usually, yes. PDRN is made of purified DNA fragments, most commonly extracted from salmon or trout. On ingredient lists you may see it as sodium DNA. That means PDRN products are not vegan, and people who avoid fish-derived ingredients should choose a different formula.
Can I use caffeine and PDRN eye patches together?
You can alternate them — for example caffeine patches on busy mornings and PDRN patches in the evening — or simply pick a patch that already contains both. There's no need to layer two patches at once; one well-formulated patch is enough.
Which is better for dark circles, caffeine or PDRN?
Neither is a direct fix for dark circles caused by pigmentation. Caffeine can help when puffiness casts a shadow, while hydrating patches with PDRN and niacinamide can make the under-eye look brighter and smoother. See our dark circles guide for more on what patches can and can't do.
